Ordinances

These are laws adopted by the City Council. They usually deal with permanent rules and regulations affecting the public, such as zoning, public safety, or municipal codes. Ordinances typically require two readings before becoming law (an introduction and an adoption at a later meeting). After the second reading, they become effective 30 days later, unless declared urgent.

Resolutions

These are formal expressions of opinion or intent of the City Council. Resolutions often handle administrative matters, like approving contracts, budgets, or appointments. They are usually passed with just one vote and take effect immediately.

Motions

Motions are used to take specific actions during meetings, like giving direction to city staff or approving meeting minutes. They’re less formal than ordinances or resolutions but still require a vote.
