Some of the Culver City High School Spring athletic teams are approaching the final week of league action which means they are also getting ready to compete in the post season, which is the CIF Playoffs. The boys’ and girls’ freshmen/sophomore and varsity track and field teams, girls’ lacrosse and boys’ volleyball team saw action this week and so did the baseball and softball teams.
Unfortunately, the season is over for girls’ lacrosse team because they lost their first round CIF Division 2 match up against King high school from Riverside 14-10 last Tuesday, April 28, on the road.
The boys’ volleyball team played their first round CIF playoff game last Wednesday, April 29. They traveled north near Pasadena and Altadena to face La Canada high school. The Centaurs finished the regular season with a 13-10 record and a second place Ocean League record of 7-1. Santa Monica was the first-place team in the league. This is the first time in five years boys’ volleyball has made the playoffs. Please contact Culver City High School to find out the results of the game against La Canada.
The boys and girl’s freshmen/sophomore and varsity track and field teams started their post season last Monday in the Ocean League Preliminaries at Culver City High School. The Ocean League Finals will be held at Lawndale high school on Thursday, May 1, beginning at 5 p.m.
The Centaurs were favorites to win the boys varsity championship, but they suffered a major setback last Monday when one of their top sprinters, Seth Shigg injured his hamstring. Shigg was expected to score points in the 200 and 400 meters and the 400X4 relay. Shigg was also the quarterback on the football team.
“It’s a big setback for us but we always say, the next man has to step up,” said co-head coach Jahmal Wright last Tuesday in a telephone interview. “We have other runners that can do the job.”
The baseball team dropped into second place last Tuesday when they lost the battle of the Ocean Leagues’ two unbeaten league teams when the were beaten by Santa Monica 4-1, at Culver City. They are travelling to Santa Monica on Thursday, May 1, for a rematch at 3:15 p.m. The Centaurs finish the regular season against Lawndale at home on May 5, and they travel to Lawndale on May 6.
