Weekend Event Offers Passports, Prizes, and $325 Grand Prize Package.
Book lovers across Southern California will have a new reason to explore local neighborhoods as 13 independent booksellers team up to launch the inaugural Los Angeles Indie Book Crawl this weekend.
Running Friday, July 24, through Sunday, July 26, the free region-wide event spans 13 shops stretching from Manhattan Beach to Pasadena and West Hollywood to Montrose. Modeled after similar successful book crawls in Seattle and San Diego, the weekend self-guided tour encourages literary enthusiasts to support local small businesses while discovering independent storefronts.
Book Soup was closed due to the water main rupture in West Hollywood, but has reopened as of July 21.
Participation is free and open to the public. Readers start by visiting any participating shop and spending at least $10 to receive an official “Book Crawl Passport” along with their first stamp. Crawlers then earn additional stamps and store-specific prizes by making $10 purchases at subsequent locations over the three-day weekend. Participants who collect stamps from all 13 locations will unlock a grand prize package containing $325 in gift cards—$25 for each featured store.
“Independent bookstores are having a resurgence,” said Jennifer Caspar, founder of Village Well Books & Coffee in Culver City. “They are the third places people need more than ever in this era of digital optimization, which can be very alienating. People still like to browse, touch, and see physical books, and hang out in stores where community and culture meet.”
