Culver City Council PTA President Summer McBride, Incoming Committee Chair Connie Wong, and CCEF Executive Director Wendy Hamill gave an in-depth presentation at the CCUSD School Board meeting on May 27, 2025 on the Backpacks for Kids Program, a program to provide CCUSD students in need with a backpack filled with non-perishable food and snacks each week to ensure that every child can eat on the weekends.
Started by a group of parent and teacher volunteers in 2012 serving 19 students at La Ballona Elementary, the program has grown to serve more than 300 students on all preschool, elementary, middle and high school campuses. Ms. McBride presented data from The Real Cost Measure in California 2023, citing that an estimated 14,574 households in Culver City, Marina del Rey and Westchester live below the poverty line. That’s 19% of families in our Westside cities.
Now a partnership between the Culver City Council of PTAs (CCCPTA) and the Culver City Education Foundation (CCEF), many local businesses and nonprofits partner with and support the program.
Always in need of additional support, the program accepts monetary and food donations, as well as volunteers. For a list of items most in need, to make a donation or to volunteer, please visit: www.ccbackpacksforkids.com.
