The Wild West – A Free Concert in Culver City

Hitch up your “Out West” vibe and mosey on down to Culver City Symphony’s free concert, “The Wild West,” on Sunday, June 22. Maestro Clyde Mitchell presents classic musical portrayals of the West, including Aaron Copland’s “Billy the Kid”, Ferde Grofé’s “Grand Canyon Suite”, and John Williams’ Overture to the John Wayne movie “The Cowboys.”

The concert’s first half features Wild West movie and TV themes, and songs of the World War II era in recognition of the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). These include “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” (Ennio Morricone), “The Magnificent Seven” (Elmer Bernstein), “The Wild, Wild West” (Richard Markowitz), “Moonlight Serenade” (Glenn Miller) and a medley of World War II hits sung by Brooke deRosa. An original western barn dance, “Hoe Down” by the Symphony’s founder, George Berres, is included. The first half ends with “America the Beautiful” by Irving Berlin – originally written in 1918 during World War I and then revised by Berlin in 1938 during the prologue to World War II.

The concert is at 7:00 pm – early enough to get a good night’s sleep before Monday’s activities – at The Robert Frost Auditorium, 4401 Elenda St., Culver City. Free parking is south on Elenda at Farragut, at the Culver City High School lot (please do not park on the residential streets).

This concert is free to the public due to the generous support of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture’s Organizational Grant Program and Creative Recovery LA. Critical support for the entire concert season comes from the community members who join the SoCal Symphony Society, the non-profit organization that sponsors the Symphony. Membership starts at only $50. To find out more about Society membership, or this and future concerts, go to http://www.culvercitysymphony.org.

The Culver City Symphony will return to start its 2025/26 season on November 15, 2025, with a patriotic concert at Veterans Auditorium in Culver City.

Two free outdoor summer concerts will be offered at the beautiful Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey, with the Orchestra performing as the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony. On Saturday, July 12, at 7:00 pm, the Disney/Pixar movie “Coco” will be screened on multiple screens with live soundtrack performed by the Orchestra. On Saturday, August 9, also at 7:00 pm, “Calling All Dawns”, an uplifting song cycle by noted local composer Christopher Tin, will be presented by the Orchestra and the Angel City Chorale. These summer concerts are provided by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Department of Beaches and Harbors.
