USC sprinter Garrett Kaalund was named Big Ten Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for April 30-May 7, it was announced by the conference office today (May 7).
The junior Kaalund won the men’s 400m race at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on May 4 with a personal-best time of 44.73. It was just Kaalund’s second career 400m race and his first this season. Kaalund’s 400m time ranks second nationally, is the Big Ten leader and is tied for seventh on USC’s all-time list with Olympian Bryshon Nellum.
Kaalund now ranks in the NCAA’s top four in three sprint events this season. He already posted the second-fastest 200m time of 20.05 and the fourth-fastest 100m time of 9.93.
Kaalund also anchored USC’s winning 4x400m relay at the Dual Meet which posted a time of 3:05.54, second in the Big Ten this season.
