RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Commission (1) consider making a recommendation to the City Council regarding adoption of a resolution naming Ball Field #3 in Bill Botts Field within Culver City Park in honor of former Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission Chair Rick Hudson; and (2) if a recommendation in support of the naming is made, consider making one or more recommendations regarding the related commemorative signage.
BACKGROUND
On August 9, 2014, PRCS Commission Chair Rick Hudson passed away unexpectedly at the age of 61, while at his family’s ranch in New Mexico. In addition to being the successful owner of Culver Glass, Chair Hudson was a tireless advocate for the young people of Culver City. He was a volunteer high school athletics coach and an active member of the Culver City Exchange Club. He also served the Culver City Community as a member of the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission and was serving as the Commission’s Chair at the time of his passing.
Fittingly, in light of Chair Hudson’s love of sports, a celebration of his life was held on Saturday, August 16, 2014, at the lower Little League field at Culver City Park’s Bill Botts Field. The celebration was followed directly by refreshments and further remembrances at the Garden Room at Culver City’s Veterans Auditorium. Veterans Park was also a most appropriate venue to hold an event to honor Chair Hudson since he volunteered at the PRCS Department’s Annual “Tree” Lighting at the Park for many years, where he delighted in making sure participants of all ages had a wonderful holiday experience.
In an August 13, 2014, City of Culver City Press Release, former Culver City Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells said, “Everyone who had the pleasure of calling Rick a friend knew his sincere and passionate commitment to Culver City, especially to the youth of our community. His unexpected passing has taken one of the most strident advocates for youth from our City. His warmth of heart, welcoming smile, and gentle spirit will be sorely missed.”
DISCUSSION
A photo illustrating Sports Field #3 in Bill Botts Field within Culver City Park is provided as an Attachment. In accordance with City Council Policy 2006-01, the proposed naming would fall under the category of a commemorative naming, for which the individual(s) would need to have made “extraordinary contributions to the community, which have been consistent and continuous over a considerable period of time” and “be deceased for a period of at least one year prior to the initiation of the naming process.”
Item #3 in the “Procedure” section of the Facility Naming Policy states, in part:
The recommendation(s) shall include the plaque, marker or memorial inscriptions and/or means of signage for each recommendation that is made. The City Council shall have the final approval of the proposed name and all related signage.
Therefore, should the Commission make a recommendation in support of naming Ball Field #3 in Bill Botts Field within Culver City Park in honor of former Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission Chair Rick Hudson, the Commission should also consider making one or more recommendations regarding the related commemorative signage.
FISCAL ANALYSIS
Should the Commission make a recommendation in support of naming Ball Field #3 in Bill Botts Field within Culver City Park in honor of former Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission Chair Rick Hudson, staff will investigate and identify potential funding sources for the commemorative signage expense while preparing to take the Commission’s recommendation before the City Council.
