RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Cultural Affairs Commission (CAC) consider the information provided herein, together with information relayed during discussion of the item, and make a decision accordingly.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
In November 2015, Chair Klein and Vice Chair Dickter approached staff about the possibility of implementing a regular cultural affairs news column to better engage the public of the work of the City’s Cultural Affairs Division, including the CAC and the Cultural Affairs Foundation Board (CAF), and also as a means of highlighting cultural events and organizations serving the Culver City community. This news column could be included in a print publication such as the Culver City News or Culver City Observer and/or be produced in electronic form similar to The Palette, which highlights art and culture in Santa Monica. The news column would be produced and coordinated by CAC and CAF Board members with minimal staff oversight.
At the December 8, 2015 Regular CAC meeting, the Chair and Vice Chair, with support from the full CAC, requested that an item pertaining to a cultural affairs news column be placed on a future CAC agenda. At this juncture, the Chair and Vice Chair have completed enough research in order to present an overview and for the CAC to make a decision. For purposes of discussion and taking action, staff recommends that, at a minimum, the CAC consider the following:
• Whether the column should be incorporated into a print publication, be in the form of an electronic publication similar to The Palette, or be produced in multiple formats;
• Determine the desired interval of such a publication (monthly, quarterly, etc.); and,
• Agree on a general process for coordinating this effort.
To ensure that communication between Commissioners and Cultural Affairs Foundation Board (CAF) conforms with the Brown Act, it is recommended that one individual from the CAF’s Public Relations Subcommittee (Dickter, Klein, Rodgers) assume the role of coordinator and communicate with other CAC and CAF members on an individual basis. Staff is prepared to place this item on future CAC and CAF agendas so that if there are updates and/or action to be taken, Commissioners (or CAF Board members) can address these collectively.
FISCAL ANALYSIS
Other than staff time, which will be limited to content review and (if applicable) dissemination of an electronic bulletin, there are no costs associated with this item.
